I just purchased this crab pot and have not used it, but I have a friend with one and have been present when he used his. I had a different design, lightweight "trap" in which the entry doors do not have tunnels leading into the trap. The doors are right at the sides of the trap.We used our traps from the same boat, in the same place with the same baits. During the incoming tide we checked the traps several times to remove crabs and re-bait if required. We were after Dungeness crabs. He put 27 keepers into the boat; I put 3 keepers into the boat (we had to throw 6 back to stay within limits). The problem with my lightweight trap? The doors are too easy to prop open or for the current to open, letting the crabs walk right out. This protoco trap is designed to be effective even if the trap is left in place for a long period of time. The crabs entering the trap will DROP into the trap once thru the door. Attempts to escape will mostly be futile since the doors are above the crabs "search pattern" for a way out. They won't run into the door, they'll keep running into the stainless-steel wire mesh. The trap seems very well constructed and durable. They are a little on the large (unwieldy) side, but they aren't real heavy. I would recommend NOT using a pot harness; simply tie or hook (much easier than tying) your line onto one side of the trap so when you pull it out of the deep you are pulling it up sideways which will reduce the water pressure on the trap, making it seem lighter in weight.
